Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiaries paid $120 million to settle multistate litigation alleging the company misrepresented the effectiveness and safety of its ASR XL and Pinnacle Ultamet hip implant devices. Some consumers who used these devices experienced painful side effects, including persistent groin pain, allergy, tissue necrosis, as well as a build-up of metal ions in the blood.
