Northwest Detention Center Minimum Wage Violations

The state of Washington and detainees at the Northwest ICE Processing Center—where detainees were paid $1 per day or compensated with food for their labor under a voluntary work program—alleged GEO Group violated state minimum wage laws. In 2021, a federal jury found GEO Group violated the law and awarded the detainee plaintiffs $17.3 million and the state $5.9 million in damages. GEO Group was also enjoined from continuing the voluntary work program without paying the minimum wage.
