Congressional Investigation of COVID Vaccine Manufacturing Failures
A joint investigation by the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis and the House Committee on Oversight and Reform found Emergent BioSolutions deliberately hid evidence from government inspectors of potential quality-control problems with batches of coronavirus vaccines. The investigators also found Emergent executives promoted the company’s manufacturing capabilities despite being warned of severe deficiencies. The investigators concluded that poor employee training, improper procedures, and other problems at Emergent’s Baltimore, Maryland, manufacturing facility ruined 400 million doses overall. The Department of Health and Human Services terminated its contract with Emergent in November 2021 due to the company’s failure to follow federal manufacturing standards.
