Medicare and Medicaid Overbilling
In 2000, the University of Chicago agreed to pay the federal government $10.9 million to settle a lawsuit accusing the university of purposely overbilling Medicare and Medicaid claims for outpatient services between 1991 and 1998. The lawsuit accused the university of defrauding the government by engaging in a practice known as “upcoding,” in which a hospital submits claims to the Medicare and Medicaid programs for more expensive treatments and procedures than it provided.
