New Hampshire MTBE Pollution Lawsuit
The state of New Hampshire filed a lawsuit in state court against 22 oil companies, including ChevronTexaco, for using the chemical methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), a gasoline additive the state alleges has caused widespread contamination of the state’s waters and has adverse health effects. The state claims that the companies produced a defective product, created a public nuisance and violated state environmental and consumer protection laws. In July 2011, Chevron settled the lawsuit for $625,000.
