Meacham, et al. v. Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (Age Discrimination)
The Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in upstate New York was managed under a contract with the Department of Energy by KAPL, Inc., a company owned by Lockheed Martin. In 1996, a KAPL downsizing resulted in the layoffs of 31 workers, all but one of whom were 40 years old or older. The former employees, including Clifford Meacham, filed a lawsuit under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. A federal jury found in favor of the plaintiffs in 2000 and awarded them nearly $6 million in damages, but the verdict was reversed on appeal. The parties entered into a confidential settlement agreement in November 2010.
